Joe Perry on Aerosmith’s Hungry Early Days, The Slow-Burn Success of “Dream On” and New ‘Legendary Edition’ of 1973 Self-Titled Debut

April 17, 2026

In late 1972, almost 55 years ago, Boston’s hottest new local sensations, Aerosmith, walked into Intermedia Studio and tracked their self-titled debut album for Columbia Records under the production guidance of Adrian Barber.

While the album famously featured the group‘s breakthrough classic, “Dream On,” it would not garner massive commercial success until three years later, when upon the single’s re-release in late 1975 it landed in the top 10 in April ’76.

The foundation of Aerosmith’s trademark blues rock swagger and kinetic energy was forged in the grooves of that first album.

Recently released was the Legendary Edition of Aerosmith, made available in various collectible configurations — 5-LP, 4-LP and 3-CD, as well as digitally — celebrating the groundbreaking debut effort.

Fortified by a sparkling new remix overseen by vocalist Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, the 2013 remaster of the original album and a slate of compelling bonus material, the set also includes a classic early Aerosmith show taped in March 1973 at Paul’s Mall in Boston and broadcast by local rock station WBCN.
